I’m back with another DIY! You know my mantra when it comes to DIY projects. It must be fairly easy, require maybe one power tool, and be cheaper than buying the real thing, or I’m not making it. Today’s project falls under every single category so it’s a winner!
I’ve seen lanterns all over the place on Pinterest and in home decor stores so I was anxious to get my hands on some. World Market has them for a steal so I picked a few out, but I decided to give them a little makeover to glam up our entryway. Keep on reading for the tutorial…
Start by arranging the doily on the lantern in your favorite design. I played around with it for a while until I came up with something I liked. Depending on the size of your doilies and lanterns, you can create lots of different designs. After you decide on a design, cut the doily if needed.
Next, spray paint the doilies you’re using. I gently taped the doilies down onto a piece of cardboard so they didn’t blow away when I spray painted them. I chose silver paint so it’s a little glam but not overly colorful. If you have more color in your home, fuchsia, teal, gold, and blue would look really pretty together.
Apply decoupage to the backside of the doily you spray painted (not on the “lace” area) and press the doily onto the lantern, smoothing out the wrinkles. I applied decoupage on-top of the doily as well, but I had matte decoupage from a previous project and it took away from the shiny silver so I stopped. The doilies adhered to the lantern fine without a top coat, just make sure to tack down the lace edges with a little glue.
It really is that simple! I styled the lanterns on top of the console table from World Market in our entryway. I love how the rustic industrial style of the table balances out the glam lanterns. For candles I used World Market’s flameless LED candles that cast a beautiful flickering light. Not only are the lanterns pretty inside your home as decor, but they’d be great for party decor or weddings too!
