This past weekend was a much needed getaway from the city. My twin sister was in town from Iowa for work and extended her stay so she could spend the weekend with my older sister and I. Friday night we went to a food truck festival and tasted so many amazing foods. Food trucks are super popular in the Bay Area and offer a variety of food so it makes it fun to try lots of different things. My favorite was BBQ brisket and grilled corn on the cob with the best seasoning. What can I say, I’m a true Iowa girl who likes her corn.
Saturday we headed to Sonoma for a weekend in wine country. One of the major roads was closed that leads to Sonoma, so we were caught in awful traffic for a while. If you’ve visited wine country before, it actually is in the country, and with so many out of towners coming from the city the traffic can easily get swamped. Our first stop was Gloria Ferrer which is known for their sparkling wine. My last semester in college I took a wine tasting class (yes, it actually exists!) where we tasted 6 different wines each week and were tested on the wine making process and all sorts of details wine connoisseurs know. You’d think after coming away from a wine class I’d know my stuff, but when I look back on it I wish I paid attention more so I learned a few more things. Before the class I had a very basic knowledge, and now I have an idea of the kinds of wines I like and how to taste the different notes.
I prefer sweet white wines, usually Rieslings or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. We had a sweet Gloria Ferrer sparkling wine that was amazing and we snacked on some cheese and crackers while sitting on the patio. Next, we opted against lunch to avoid traffic and headed towards Ram’s Gate Winery. It was a beautiful winery with a huge tasting room and a comfortable lounge area for the members club. My sister has a coworker that works at Rams Gate and she was kind enough to seat us in the lounge area and give us the full VIP treatment. We tasted a flight of wines (the red Zinfandel dessert wine was a surprising favorite for me) and then we ended the evening with a glass of sparkling wine and chocolate cake. The view of the rolling hills was amazing and it was just an all around gorgeous day. I suggest checking out Rams Gate if you’re ever in the area. It’s my favorite place in wine country to date!
